This car originally had an 850cc engine with a 4 speed transmission. I
bought the shell with another engine, a 1275 with an automatic transmission.
both had stood outside for 20 years, the engine with the head off. The best
bet at this point would have been to buy another engine and transmission and
rebuild those. I however decided to rebuild the engine that came with the
car, primarily because I am not very bright but enjoy the challenge..I wont tell you the machine shop cost but I probably came out equal
with buying another engine at the end of the day. at lest I know this one is
good however.
Here are some pics of the automatic transmission rebuild. I got the
rebuild kit from JPAT in the UK. Great people, very helpful and I have the
foulis overhaul manual for the automatic transmission and some other
downloaded manuals.

This is the top and reverse clutch fully disassembled. I cleaned it all
and then replaced all of the rubber seals and the steels and friction
plates.

The fully reassembled top and reverse clutch. its the more modern 3
friction plate set up. If anyone is interested i have a brand new top and
reverse clutch in the box for a 2 plate set up.

the forward clutch prior to rebuild. this was the really
weak part of the system, and mine was no different on disassembly it proved
to have eaten through friction plates and steels and badly chewed into the
drive plate. I luckily found another new drive plate (they are no longer
available) and rebuilt this one. I will however get the original drive plate
cut down by 1mm (40 thou) and then install another friction plate and steel.
Seems this was a common rebuild technique in the day and the 3 pack clutch
survived the pressures much better than the 2 pack clutch.

its hard to see but there is a nasty little o ring on the
inside of the shuttle in the forward clutch and thats the seal that gives
you the pressure to go forwards!

the forward clutch all rebuilt with new plates. I will have
the old plate machined and ready to rebuild with new friction plates and
steels again in 50K

The rebuilt box painted and partially reassembled. Forward
clutch still to go in.

all together, looking pretty in its new multicolours! for
the purists its all I had on hand it will go dull
Austin green eventually

I just thought it looked rather fun in its multicolours!
